The sun was beginning to set as Sawtooth finally came into view in the distance. Jack tended to avoid settled territories generally, but the girl riding his horse needed a hot meal and a warm bed for at least one night. He’d managed to stabilize her, but she needed a real medic, even if he wasn’t using magic. He knew it was a risk, walking into town, even if he was on his own. He knew how to hide his abilities, but the western settlements tended to be suspicious of strangers these days, and he had no idea how much, if any, control this unconscious girl had over her abilities. And that’s assuming she even knew she had them.
The full moon was high in the sky when Jack finally reached the town with his fragile bundle. He walked his horse up to the inn at the center of town, tied her up and gave her a feed bag before gently lifting the still unconscious girl inside and placing her on a sofa before ringing the bell at the front desk.
“Help you?” came a tired and gruff voice from the back room.
